DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION OF THE MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION By this memorand'un you are directed to conduct a diagnostic evaluation of the McGuire Nuclear Station.
Support for the diagnostic evaluation team will be provided as necessary by NRR and the regional offices.
As you know, the Duke Power Company was discussed during the NRC senior annagers meeting held June 2-3, 1987 in Region IV.
From these discussions, i'
which addressed the regulatory and operational performance history of Duke l
Power Company nuclear stations, it became apparent that additional informa-tion would be needed to make an adequately informed decision regarding the overall performance of Duke' Power Company nuclear operations.

l determined that a diagnostic evaluation of the McGuire Nuclear Station is the most effective means of obtaining this information.
The evaluation L
l should be broadly structured to assess overall plant operation and the strength of Duke Power Company's major programs for supporting safe plant operation at McGuire.
l You should schedule the diagnostic evaluation to ensure that the evaluation report is completed before the Spring 1988 Senior Management meeting.
I would like to be informed of your specific plans regarding schedule, team composition, and evaluation methodology when they are completed.
