~
Limerick Generating Station Unit 1 October 1 through October 31, 1988 I.
Narrative Summary of Operating Expnriences Limerick Unit 1 entered October at 62% of Rated Core Thermal Power (RCTP) as a result of a continuing fuel performance (off gas) problem.
In order to maintain condenser off-gas activity below the PECo corporate administrative limit for Limerick, reactor power was reduced to 57% on October 14.
As of October 31, Unit 1 was operating at 57% RCTP with an offgas activity of 50,000 uCi/sec.
Operational events that occurred <?.uring the month of October included:
On October 7, 1988, the
'lC' Condensate Pump lower motor bearing failed (cause still under investigation).
0 0
Bearing temperatures rose from 120 F to 270 P and vibration levels exceeded alarm levels forcing the shutdown of the pump.
The resulting feedwater flow transient caused a sudden 12 inch drop in reactor level, and required operator intervention to prevent a scram.
The bearing was subsequently replaced, and the pump is available for standby use.
On October 9, 1988, with the feedwater level controller utilizing the
'A' narrow range reactor water level instrument, the
'A' narrow range level indication rose to 37 inches.
Simultaneously, the
'B' and
'C' level indicators displayed below normal and decreasing values.
Investigation revealed that two instrument valve packing leaks were causing the slow depressurization of an instrument rack reference leg.
The feedwater controller input was temporarily switched to the
'B' narrow range level instrument until the packing was tightened and the
'A' narrow range level indication returned to normal.
On October 13, 1988, a Main Control Room (MCR) 'igh radiation signal was initiated when the
'C' channel exceeded its trip setpoint.
Three additional isolations occurred from October 13-21.
Air samples taken an the ductwork revealed radiation levels less than the lower limit of detection (LLD).
The
'A' channel also exhibited similar trends.
The cause for these isolations is currently under investigation.
Resolution of this matter will be published in a supplement to the LER before March 1, 1989.
II. Challenges to Main Steam Safety Relief Valves There were no challenges to the Main Steam Relief Valves during October.
