Dear Dr. Murley:
Inspection and Enforcement Notice 86-03, " Potential Deficiencies in Environmental Qualification of Limitorque Motor Valve Operator Wiring" provided information on potential generic problems with Limitorque operators.
Preventive maintenance procedures at Nine Mile Point Unit 1 governing Limitorque operators require routine visual inspection of internal wiring.
This generic problem in the aforementioned notice would likely have been detected and corrected through the use of these procedures during the current outage. However, the thirty-nine (39) Limitorque operators included in the Environmental Qualification Program are being inspected during the current outage to identify their specific internal wiring. Our inspection results to date indicate that fifteen (15) are acceptable, twenty-two (22) have indeterminate qualification and two (2) are to be inspected prior to the end of the outage.
Wiring replacements on those operators found with indeterminate qualification, will be completed by the end of the current outage.
