NRC Region III recently received an allegation pertaining to a contractor employee at the Byron Nuclear Generating Station.

The enclosure to this

~1etter describes the allegation received and the identity of the person allegedly involved in this "Fitness for Duty" issue. This issue was discussed with Mr. G. Toleski of your staff on June 10, 1988.

We request that you initiate an investigation in order to fully analyze the allegation and determine if the allegation is substantiated or not; determine if there is any impact on safety related equipment; and review the quality of work performed by the individual identified in the enclosure to this letter.

We also request that a written report of the results of your review and the disposition of this matter be provided to us within 30 days of receipt cf this letter.

The enclosure to this letter should be strictly controlled and distribution limited to personnel with a "need-to-know." The enclosure to this letter is considered as Exempt From Public Disclosure in accordance with Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 2.790(d).

A copy of this letter, excluding the enclosure, will be placed in the Public Document Room as required by 10 CFR 2.790.

The response directed by this letter is not subject to the clearance procedu e of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the Paperwork Reduction j
