WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 MAY 2 0 1986 Alan C. Brown, Esquire Miller & Chevalier 655 Fifteenth Street, NW IN RESPONSE REFER Washington, DC 20005 TO F01A-85-841
Dear Mr. Brown:
This is in response to your letter dated December 19, 1985, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (F0IA), access to U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission records concerning training programs or courses relating to radiation protection.
In response to two earlier F0IA requests, F01A-84-317 (Bell) and F0IA-85-481 (HANAUER), a voluminous amount of records concerning training and instructional materials were placed in the NRC's Public Document Room (PDR), 1717 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20555, where they are available for public inspection and copying. The additional records listed on the enclosed appendix are now being placed in the POR in folder F01A-85-841 under your name.
As Mr. Frank Karas explained in telephone conversations with you, your request potentially covered a very broad range of records located at the NRC's headquarters offices, at its five regional offices, and at the NRC Chattanooga, TN, Technical Training Center. These offices collectively estimated that hundreds of hours of search time would be required in an effort to comply with your request, and that thousands of pages of documents would be collected for duplication and possible release to the PDR.
In your conversation you agreed that this costly effort might produce a great quantity of records that may not be of use to you.
Consequently, you stated you would visit the PDR to examine the records made available under the two previous F0IA cases described above. You stated on March 5, 1986, that, following that planned effort, you would contact Mr. Karas to inform him how we can conclude our action on your request. To date you have not contacted us and our April 25, 1986, call to you has not been' returned. Consequently, we are closing our action on this request. You may, of course, submit a new F0IA request in the event you are interested in additional records following your visit to the PDR.

1 Mr. Brown For your assistance in considering this matter, the staff noted that each inspector has a unique training program for the individual's specific training needs. The program includes NRC courses as well as courses offered by other sources. The NRC course materials include 10 CFR Parts 19, 20, and 30 through
- 40. You may also wish to inspect at the PDR NRC Manual Chapters 1231, 4500, 4530, and 0500 and IE Manual Chapter 1231, which address various training matters.
If you have any questions regarding the response to your FOIA request, please telephone Mr. Karas at 492-4610.
Sincerely, 9
& k-t w Donnie H. Grimsley, Director Division of Rules and Records Office of Administration
