5014899 Attachment 2 HI-STORM 100 Amendment 15 RAI Response Supplemental Information

  • Materials - RAI 8-1
1. HI-TRAC MS gap between the bottom plate and bottom flange to allow natural air circulation between inner transfer cask shell and outer canister shell.
2. Spacers material type and classification, ITS or NITS.
3. Identify physical shape and how the spacers are secured.
4. Identify inlet vents in HI-TRAC MS.

For the HI-TRAC MS the applicant states that a gap maintained by spacers between the (SA-516, Grade 70) bottom plate, and bottom flange will allow for natural air circulation and enhanced cooling between the (SA-516, Grade 70) inner transfer cask shell and the (Type 304/316, stainless steel) canister outer shell.

No where on the licensing drawing or the SAR does the applicant identify the material type, physical shape and how the spacers are secured.

I presume theyre not ITS. In addition, I presume the material is compatible with the carbon steel bottom plate lid and flange. Further, I presume the spacers are secured by the compression of the SA-193, Grade B7 bolts? Lastly, the applicant discusses blockage of all Inlet Vents in HI-TRAC MS? I presume this is the opening provided by the spacers, but why refer to it as Inlet Vents? Is there something Im missing?

Holtec Response:

There are [Proprietary Information withheld in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390]. The spacers are [Proprietary Information withheld in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390].

During fabrication, the spacers become a [Proprietary Information withheld in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390]. The thickness of the spacer sets the nominal gap between the bottom flange and bottom lid. The spacers are considered NITS.

The gap created by the spacers is defined on drawing 11381 Sheet 2 Zone B2. The gap is defined as [Proprietary Information withheld in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390]. This space is referred to as a vent in the FSAR. [Proprietary Information withheld in accordance with 10 CFR 2.390].
