The NRC staff is reviewing Gulf States Utilities' August 5,19ES submittal regarding operation with feedwater heaters out of service. The staff has identified additional information that is needed to complete the review of Sections 4.P and 5.3 of hED0-31583 that was included in your submittal.

Please provide your response to the enclosure within 45 days of the receipt of this letter. The staff's review of the other sections of your August 5, 1988 letter is continuing.

The reporting ar.d/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer that. ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

REOUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION GULF _ STATES _llTILITIES COMPANY DOCKET NO.,50-458 Please provide the following information regdrding the General Electric Company report, NEDO-31583, that was attached to the August 5, 1988 license amendrent request regarding operation with feedwater heater (s) out of service:

1. A quantitative estimate of the effect of feedwater heater (s) out of service (FWHOS) on the acoustic and flow-induceo loads en reactor vessol internals, by reference to a detail calculation. (Section 4.2 of NED0-31583).

2. A quantitative estimate of stresses and deflections induced in the reactor vessel internals most impacted by the above leads, as well as the justifi-cation of their acceptance. (Section4.2ofNEDO-31EES)

3. A detailed description sf the loading used in the stress analysis and

, fatigue usage calculation for the feedwater system piping. (Section 5.3 cf NED0-51583).
