EQUIPMENT CLASSIFICATION (TAC NO. 52819)

Re: Big Rock Point Plant By Generic Letter 83-28 dated July 8, 1983, you were requested to respond to certain generic concerns that developed from the investigation into the failure of scram circuit breakers at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1. These concerns are categorized into four areas: (Item 1) Post Trip Review; (Item 2) Equipment Classification and Vendor Interface; (item 3) Post-Maintenance Testing; and (Item

4) Reactor Trip System Reliability Improvements. Your response to these four areas of Generic Letter 83-28 was provided by letters dated November 7, 1983, .

February 2,1984, October 2,1984, June 1,1984, June 28,1984, August 16, 1985, and April 22, 1987.

We have completed our review of your responses to Item 2.1 (Part 1) of Generic Letter 83-28 relating to confirmation that all components whose functioning is required to trip the reactor are identified as safety-related on af plant documentation and in information handling systerrs that are used,to control all activities performed on this safety-related equipment. The results of our review are provided in the enclosed Safety Evaluation. Based on our review, we find that your Eqaipment Qualification requirements meet the requirements of Generic Letter 83-28 and are, therefore, acceptable. We consider Item 2.1 (Part 1) resolved. ,
