PURPOSE: To discuss CP&L's planned submittal of a license application  !

for dry spent fuel stcrage under 10 CFR Part 72 at its Brunswick Stean Electric Plant site.

) DISCUSSION:

This was an introductory meeting. CP&L described its managernent team for the ,

dry stcrage acticn (see enciesure 2). Then CP&L cutlined details of the  !

i proposed action (see enclosure 3). CP&L plans to apply for storage of 304  :

i pressurized water reacter (PWR) spent fuel asserblies. These assemblies were (

originally irradiated at CP&L's H. B. Robinson Stean Electric Plant, Unit 2 i j (hER2), snd subsequently transhisped to Brunswick for storage in its reactor l pool. The PWR assenblies would be stored in 44 rnedules in a NUTECH NL'H"MS.7  ;

t)pc concrete ecdule and stainless steel canister system like that constructed [

at HBR2. CP&L plans to submit its license application on January 6, 1989, and  !

seeks NRC license issuance by itarch 1990.

l l Applicable safeguards requirements were outlined by NRC staff in respense to I CP&L questions.

One significant point regarding the Brunswick site, which will be considered in  !

j the safety review, is that it is not a ficod. free site for any of the four  !

l potential sterage sites being considered (see enclosure 3, Figure A-0, "ISFSI l Candidate Sites"). ggg l
