Byron Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Verification and Validation of Safety Parameter Display System NRC Docket Nos. 50-454/455 and 50-456/457 Reference (a):
E.D. Swartz letter to H.R. Denton dated December 29, 1983
Dear Mr. Murley:
A general description of the Verification and Validation (V&V) Plan j
for all Commonwealth Edison Company Stations was provided in Reference (a).
This letter provides notification that implementation of the V&V Plan for the Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) at the Byron and Braidwood Stations is complete.
The V&V Plan describes the program for documenting that the correct j
SPDS objectives are being met (Verification), and for documenting the testing and acceptance of the SPDS during conception, design development, construction and turnover for station use (Validation).
In addition, it describes a method to control and coordinate the SPDS effort and to document the results.
The V&V documentation demonstrates that each phase of the SPDS project has been completed. The documentation generally includes system requirements, design review checklists, open items, design documentation and correspondence, a human factors review report, operator training material, software discrepancy report, and test reports or each station. Thus, it ties together the development of the SpDS. Copies of the V&V documentation reside at the Edison PWR Engineering Departrtent and at the Byron and Braidwood Stations.
These are available for inspection, f003 8806150255 880606

- , The implementation of the V&V Plan for the Byron /Braidwood SPDS resulted in the identification of three (3) open items which are presently being addressed.
The first two items listed below resulted from the human factors review of the SPDS.
Item 3 resulted from the review of the V&V Plan implementation by the V&V Team. The V&V Team consists of six Commonwealth Edison engineers who review the implementation of the V&V Plan to ensure completeness and consistency of the SpDS designs for all stations.
Item l-Revisions to the Byron and Braidwood operator training material i
must be made which clarify how. validated and unvalidated data can be distinguished on the SPDS and how selection of the SPDS iconic displays are accomplished. The operator training material is scheduled to be revised by December 31, 1988.
Item 2-Antiglare screens must be installed on the Braidwood SpDS CRT's.
This will be done by the completion of the first refueling outage.
Item 3-A Sof tware Design Description and liardware Design Description will be prepared by Commonwealth Edison Process Computer Systems for the Byron /Braidwood SpDS. The Design Descriptions will be completed by December 31, 1988.
Sufficient documentation presently exists on the SPDS software and hardware design, as demonstrated during the review phases of the V&V Plan. However, the V&V Team made the recommendation to prepare a Software Design Description and Hardware Design Description to ensure that the SpDS hardware and software documentation is consistent for all stations.
The V&V documentation will be updated as each open item is closed out to ensure that it accurately reflects the implementation status of the V&V Plan.
Please address any questions you may have concerning this matter to this office.
4 Very truly yours, eM S. C. Hunsader Nuclear Licensing Administrator
