Chicago, minois 60690 0767 September 23, 1988 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Mail Station P1-137 Washington, DC. 20555 Subject.
Zion Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 & 2 DPR-39 and DPR-48, Proposed Technical Specification Amendment l
BIT Removal Declet Nos. 50-295 and 50-304 i
Reference June 9, 1988 letter from G.E. Trzyna to U.S. NRC l
Gentiemen l
The referenced letter transmitted a proposed amendment to Zion Station's Technical Specification which would eliminate the Boron Injection Tank (BIT) from both Units 1 and 2.
The amendment l
outlined a sequential program to remove or isolate the BIT during l
power operation or subsequent refueling outages as appropriate.
Our submittal addressed the issue of BIT removal, however, it did not address the global issue of high boric acid concentrations.
Zion has an overall program to address the concerns associated with storage and handling of high boric acid concentrations. The removal of the BIT is the first step in this program. A subsequent proposal will disucss the reduction of the boric acid concentration from 12% to 4%.
This change will require the installation of additional storage tanks in the boric acid storage system and this modification will be performed in the future.
Please direct any questions that you may have to this office.
Very truly yours, l
