Dear Sir:
This Special Report is submitted in accordance with LaSalle Unit 2 Operating License NPF-18, Appendix A. Technical Specifications 3.3.7.9 and 6.6.C.
On August 17, 1988, due to construction activities associated with the installation of the Reactor Vessel Water Level Instrumentation System and Post LOCA Containment H /02 Monitor Heat Trace modifications, it was necessary 2
to remove from operable service the following fire detection zones:
2-34, 2-35 (Unit 2 Reactor Building - 761'); 2-17, 2-17P (Unit 2 Reactor Building -
740'), 2-22, 2-22P (Unit 2 Reactor Building - 710').
These measures were taken as a conservative precaution to prevent spurious zone fire alares due to extensive welding, grinding, and open flame wolk in the areas.
In accordance with the Action Statement 'a" of Technical Specification 3.3.7.9, an hourly fire watch patrol was established to inspect the affected fire detection zones during that time the detectors are inoperable.
The smoke detectors have been out of service in excess of the allowed fourteen i
(14) days prior to requiring a Special Report.
Fire detection zones 2-34, 2-35, 2-17, 2-17P, 2-22, 2-22P will be returned to operable service upon cornpletion of the Reactor Vessel Water Level Instrumentation System and post LOCA Containment H /Og Monitor Heat Trace modifications.
These 2
modifications are scheduled for completion prior to the end of the Unit 2 second refueling outage.
