SUBJECT:

MINED CAVITY MEETING WITH NYDEC On September 16, 1987 a meeting was held with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and their contractor, Acres International Corpo-ration, to infom them of infomation available on the study of mined cavity technology as a waste disposal method. The attendees at the meeting were as follows:

NMSS/LLW Paul H. Lohaus John D. Randall RES/DE/WMB NYDEC/BER Joe Jones NYDEC/BER Barbara Youngberg Stewart N. Thompson -

GPA/SLITP Cardelia Maupin NMSS/HLW Mysore Nataraja Jon Peshel NMSS/HLW Tim McCartin RES The meeting began with an overview of Part 60. An interesting point made in this presentation was the statement of the possibility of placing EPA stan-dards for the total amount of material released over 1000 years directly into NRC regulations on HLW. The next presentation made discussed Contaminant Transport Models. During the presentation a list of the available transpcrt models were distributed to the attendees; a copy of this infomation is enclosed. The attendees also received a discussion on other material that is available through the NRC on mined cavity disposal (copy of list enclosed).

The final presentation during the meeting consisted of slidas of facilities in France which are being used as mined cavity disposal sites.

NYDEC made rehests for some of the documents discussed during the presen-tations. These documents will be obtained from Mr. Martin and transmitted to Ms. YoungSerg.
