SUBJECT:

CLARIFICATION OF IGSCC CATEGORY B WELDS - SHOREHAM This is in response to your March 28, 1988 request for clarification as to whether the staff would find LILCO's proposal to classify all induction heating stress improverent (IHSI) treated welds as Category B when responding to Generic Letter 88-01 even though not all post-IHSI treated welds were ultrasonicly tested. LILCO bases this request on the results of random ultrasonic testing of IHSI treated reactor recirculation system piping welds.

Twenty-five percent of these welds were tested and no indications of cracks were detected.

The staff will accept LILCO's classification of all IHSI treated welds as Category B when responding to Generic Letter 88-01 based on the above test results.
