Subject:
Submittal of new Reactor Physics Methods reports and schedule for submitting plant specific reports.
Dear Sir:
In April of 1988, Yankee submitted a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory ' Commission indicating that we would be submitting validation and verificauon reports on a new reactor physics method. De intent is to use this new method for Yankee Nuclear Power Station (YNPS) Vennont Yankee N.. clear Power Station (VY) and Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station (MY).
ne first report, "CASMO 3 Validation and Vertftcation" was submitted in April of 1988 (Reference d). We second report, "SIMUIATE-3 Validauon and Verification" is enclosed along with this letter. CASMO-3 is a lattice physics code used to generate nuclear constants for application in spatial core models. SIMUIATE 3 is an advanced nodal code used to generate physics data for reload analysis calculations.
Yankee intends to use these methods first in Cycle 21 of YNPS, scheduled for a sununer of 1990 startup. A YNPS plant specific report will be submitted in early 1989. We will begin licensing analysis of Cycle 21 by mid 1989. Werefore Yankee would need some indication of the status of the validation reports in early 1089. De haine Yankee plant specific report will be submitted near the end of 1989, Again, these pla'at specific reports will focus on applying the method presented in the t-validation and ve.1fication reports to the Vermont and Maine Yankee plants specifically.
We trust that yo, will find this submittal satisfactory. Please note that pursuant to the requirements of 10CIH170, an application fee of $150 is enclosed. In order to expedite the review process, we are willing to discuss the intended method in a technical meeting at your earliest corwenience.
