SUBJECT:
SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT, LICENSE AMENDMENT APPLICATION DATED AUGUST 1, 1988, RE RELOCATION OF RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL AND PU-239 WASTE BACKGROUND Currently, Purdue University stores the Pu-239 waste material in an in-wall vault in Room 6-59 of the Pharmacy Building. Due to the relocation of Radiological Control from the Pharmacy Building to the Civil Engineering Building, it is necessary to move the waste to the new facility.
DISCUSSION The Pu-239 waste will be stored in an in-wall vault located in Room 8201B (Radiological Control Dispensing Facility) in the Civil Engineering Building.
Since the possession limit for the Pu-239 waste is minimal (1g), there is no criticality concern. All procedures and st.curity measures will remain the same.
The licensing of Purdue activities is in accordance with 10 CFR 51.22(c)(14)(v) and therefore, neither an Environmental Inpact Statement nor an Environmental Assessment is warranted for this action.
CONCLUSION / FINDINGS The staff finds that the proposed rr. location of the Pu-239 waste will not have any adverse effect on the public hralth and safety or on the environment.
Approval of the amendment application is recommended.
The amendment request was discussed with D. Wiedeman, RIII,and he had no objections.
