Dear Fr. Griffin:

l As part of the Commission's Maintenance and Surveillance Program, a site l

survey was cerducted at Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO-2) during the week

[

of November 4,1985 by a team of the NRC staff and consultants from Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory. The purpose of the survey was to collect information and observations about the ANO-2 naintenance and surveillance program. The results of the survey detailed in the enclosed report will assist the Cctrmission in learning current raintenance practices in the nuclear industry and evalueting their effectiveness.

1 The report details information and observations in five ncin areas associated with the ANO-2 mainterance and surveillance program: organization and adninistration; facilities and equipment; technical procedures; personnel; and l

work control.

In each of the five main areas, the team observed evidence of strong management support to inprove traintenance related activities at Ah0-2.

Furthermore, the team believes that ANO-2 should have a strong maintenance and surveillance prcgrar if the licensee maintains management support in this area at the present level.

In closing, we would like to thank you for the cooperation and assistance provided to the team during the visit by members of your staff.

No specific response to this letter is required, however, if you have corrments or cuestions concerning the enclosed report, please contact us.

l Sincerely, unnel66AL SIGMD U-f Robert S. Lee, Project Manager l
