Dear Mr. Maret:

By letter dated Sep' tember 18,1998, you provided a clarification to a statement made in our safety evaluation dated September 2,1998, regarding pov'er sources for fire events involving the Control Room / Cable Vault.

Our September 2,1998, letter and safety evaluation provided cur agreement with the proposed changes to the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station fire pre tection program to: (1) redesignate the Main Control Room, Cable Vault or cable spreading room, and Battery Room as a single fire area, and (2) delete the requirement to maintain the electrical penetration seal between the Control Room and Cable Vault as a rated fire banier.

We have reviewed this clarification and determined that it does not change our previous conclusions on this issue. We agree with the proposed changen to the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station fire protection program as described in your letter dated July 13,1995, as supplemented on January 20, and August 8,1997, and approved by our safety evaluation dated September 2,1998.
