Beta Sources for Gauging and Calibration DESCRIPTION:
The radioactive material is singly encapsulated in 304, 316 stainless steel or 7075-T651 aluminum.
The capsule varies in diameter from 3/8" (9.23 mm) to 2"
((5.08 cm), and in height from 1/8" (3.18 mm) to 1" (2.54 cm) (depending on activity).
Wall thickness is maintained at 0.040" (1.02 mm) minimum, except for the recessed end window.
The end window thickness (foil) varies from 0.00025 - 0.005" (0.00635 - 0.12 7 mm) for stainless steel and from 0.002 - 0.001" (0.0508 -.0254 mm) for aluminum.
The end window is welded to the capsule body using a TIG welding technique.
The end of the capsule opposite the thin window is extended in length and threaded 6-32NC to allow a handling rod to be attached or to allow it to be threaded into a permanent source holder.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
This source capeule has a classification of 22232 as described in ANSI publication N5.10-1968. The manufacturer states that prototype sources have met the test criteria specified in the ANSI document.
l OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL-1 Each source assemble is visually inspected after fabrication, then subjected to a Beta contamination wipe-leak test.
If the l
wipe test indicates contamination, then a hot water bubble test will be performed.

The~Model BSE-1 Sealed Sources are no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.
is no longer in business.
Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.
The sources were originally approved for licensing purposes by the-Louisiana Division of Radiation Control.
NRC attempted to 2
obtain copies of all information submitted by the regi'3trant in support of the evaluation.
However, NRC could not locate all the information.
Therefore, no safety evaluation of the sources was performed au part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.
