SUBJECT:

GDP 98-2027, RESPONSE TO INSPECT;ON REPORT 70-7002/98-206 AND NRC CORRESPONDENCE DATED AUGUST 20,1998

Dear Mr. Miller:

In a letter dated August 20,1998, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rejected USEC's response and corrective actions for Notice of Violation (NOV) 98-206-03 because it failed to address inadequate corrective actions for a previous, similar violation (97-206 06). In the NRC's correspondence of August 20,1998, USEC was required to respond to the rejection and follow the same instructions specified in the original Notice when preparing a response.

However, following interactions and discussions between an NRC inspector and Portsmouth

, Plant Staff on September 3,1998, additional explanation of USEC's original response was

presented. As such, the NRC has determined that further response to this NOV is not warranted. Effective implementation of your proposed corrective actions and the reasons for the violation will be examined during future inspections.
