' Radiographic' Exposure Device DESCRIPTION:
The device consists of a. depleted uranium shield and a polyurethane filler enclosed in a 1/8" (3.18 mm) steel case consisting of a~right circular cylinder and two cast 1/4"
. ( 6. 3 5 mm) _end pieces.
The assembly is secured by.heliarc
- welding.
The bottom of the device has'four ears located in the 0
' corners and a hole through each ear which is used for securing the device to a pipe.
A zircaloy "S"
tube extends through the device's shielding mass.
At one end is a lock' box through which the source pigtail cable andfmale half of the quick disconnect-connect. connector protrude.
The lock box is designed such that the source pigtail.cannot be

pulled' backwards to the lock-box to expose the source when j
connecting the drive cable female half of the connector to the i
source pigtail.
A plunger type lock secures the assembly against movemelia in the zircaloy "S"_ tube.
The lock' box is located at
'the' top of the' device. 'At the bottom ' of the device, a source
' conduit.is' attached to a fitting at thefopposite end of the "S"
tube byLa spring loaded quick disconnect-connect arrangement after removing a protective screw cap.
The source guide tube may beLof-transparent PVC'or'the more common' opaque: neoprene coated j
steel-type.
i The-depleted uranium' shield (approximately 27/ pounds [12 kg] ) is secured in position-by the two cast' steel end pieces and is cushioned'on its' circumference within the device by polyurethane.

The collimator is screwed to a threaded. portion
~around the quick' disconnect-connector. 'This arrangement permits the' device to be,usedias a Pipeliner in that the-source is never

The source'only moves an approximate distance of 6" (15. 24. cm).
The'collimator is 2-3/8" i
n (6.03 cm) long by-2" '(5.08 cm) J in diameter and has a cavity of

1-3/8 " - (3.4 9 cm) deep which is located 0.1;3" (7.62 mm) offset from the center of the collimator.
This allows la (2.54 cm) of

tungsten on both-the top and front of'the collimator.
The~ cavity is'0.600" (15.24 mm) inJdiameter and'is tapped with. number 14 national fineLthread'_to a depth of.3/8" (9.53 mm).
A window is cut in'the collimator all the!way through to'the cavity and a butt plate of' stainless ~ steel',.0.025" ( 0. 64 ami) thick is cut and fit in the window.

SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
.The Model Century S.. Universal device is no longer manufactured
- orLdistributed by Gamma Industries,.Inc.'and Gamma Industries,
-Inc. is no longer in business.
Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration
. certificate.
.The device was originally approved for licensing purposes ay the Louisiana Division of Radiation Control.
NRC attempted'to obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support of the evaluation.
However, NRC could not locate all the

'information.
Therefore, no safety evaluation.of the device was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.
