VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER CONPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-338/87-37 AND 50-339/87-37 SUPPLENENTAL RESPONSE In our responses to the Notice of Violation and Notice of Deviation from Inspection Report Nos. 50-338/87-37 and 50-339/87-37, dated February 5, 1988, we indicated that we would provide schedular information for compliance to the Appendix R deficiencies by May 1, 1988.
The following information supplements our previous responses to Notice of Violation B and the Notice of Deviation.
Notice of Violation B was issued for failure to develop and implement procedures for the periodic inspection of fire barriers.
The cause of the violation was failure to implement procedures as identified in the design change that performed fire protection modifications.
In accordance with our commitment in our initial response to this violation, fire protection maintenance procedures have been implemented to provide surveillance for areas containing electrical cable fire wraps, radiant energy shields, and cable tray fire stops.
In order to determine if full compliance with Appendix R inspection and testing requirements was achieved, a review was performed for other Appendix R Design Change Packages and Engineering Work Requests.
This review identified additional Appendix R equipment that did not have inspection and te> ting procedures.
Procedures will be implemented, as required, by November 15, 1988 to accomplish the required inspection and testing requirements.
The Notice of Deviation was issued for failure to upgrade the fire detection system in the Ur.it 2 Quench Spray Pump House to provide full area coverage as described in our exemption to Appendix R of 10 CFR Part 50.
As a result, an evaluation was performed to determine what modifications would be required in the Unit I and 2 Quench Spray Pump Houses to fully conform to NFPA 72E which fEo \\

was the basis for the exemption.
The evaluation determined that a total of approximately 9 additional fire detectors need to be installed in the Uni *,1 and 2 Quench Spray Pump Houses and Main Steam Valve Houses to provide full area coverage in accordance with NFPA 72E.
In addition, one detector must be relocated.
The installation of the additional fire detectors and the relocation of the one detector will be completed by December 31, 1988.
An evaluation was performed to document that the currently installed detection system provides adequate protection until the upgraded system can be installed.
Our commitment to update the Appendix R Report by May 30, 1988 must be revised in order to reflect the final design of the upgraded detection system in the l
Appendix R report.
This commitment was made in order to incorporate the proposed detection system design in our annual Appendix R Report update.
However, our current plans are to update the Report following final system l
installation.
t We have no objection to this correspondence being made a matter of public record.
