1 Docket #:

50-317 Hunit Name:

Calvert Cliffs - U1 Date:-

August 16, 1988 Report Month:

July 1988 Summary of Unit i Operatina ExperienrJL

-Unit 1 began _the month-(July 1) shutdown for cor.tinued

_ refueling operations.

Later_that day (at 0715).the unit was taken critical and we began plant testing.of reactor physics.

and turbine overspeed testing.

The main turbine was rotated (July 3 at 1415) and paralleled to the grid (at 1755).

However, high vibration of bearing #11 at the Exciter forced a

-trip of.the main turbine (at 1925).

A coupling modification was-found to be the source of vibration and was repaired.

The main turbine was rolled (July 4 at 0445) and paralleled to the grid _(at 0841).

The grid breaker was opened for the turbine overspeed test (at 1217) and reclosed (at 1430).

The unit began a slow' power increase for fuel conditioning (July

12) until we attained 100% power, 845 MWe Net (at 1825).

Unit operations reduced power (July 14 at 2155) for #14A Travelling Screen control power repairs.

The unit tripped (July IS) later-that night (at 0305) when maintenance on the

  1. 12C Feedwater Heater level controller caused a high heater level trip.

The unit was kept shutdown while troubleshooting the Hydrogen Seal Oil System.

4 The unit went critical (July 17 at 0000) and the generator was paralleled to the grid (at 092S).

Full power (840 MWe Net) was reached later that day (at 1710).

The unit stayed at full power until (July 29 at 2215) we were forced to reduce power to 62% (540 MWe Net).

This allowed us tc clean waterboxes, repair Amertaps and perform miscellaneous maintenance on #12 Steam Generator Feed Purnp.

Power was then increased (July 31 at 0600) until full power-(840 MWe Net) was

.eached (at 1300).

The month ended with the unit at full power (846 MWe Net).

Name of facility: Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit No. 1.

2.

Scheduled date for next refueling shutdown:

March 31, 1990 3.

Scheduled date for restart following refueling: May 15,1990 4.

Will refueling or resumption of operation thereafter require a Technical Specification change or other license amendment?

Resumption of operation after refueling will require changes to Technical Specifications. The changes will be such as to allow operation of the plant with a higher enriched (4.3%) reload batch and reshuffled core for Unit l's next 24 month cycle.

5.

Scheduled date(s) for submitting proposed licensing action and supporting information.

June 9,1988

( enrichment submittal )

February 15, 1990 ( reload submittal )

6.

Iaportant licensing considerations associated with the refueling.

Reload 'uol will be similar to that reload fuel inserted into Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 tenth cycle except for the higher enrichment (up to 5.0%)

7.

The number of fuel assemblies (a) in the core and (b) in tle spent fuel storage pool.

(a) 217 (b) 1331 Spent fuci pools are common to Units 1 and 2.

8.

(a) The present licensed spent fuel pool storage capacity, and Co) the size of any increase in licensed storage capacity that has been reque.ted or is plantied, in number of fuel assemblies.

(a) 1830 (b) 0 3.

The projected date of the last refueling that can be dischargcd to the Spent Puel Pool assuming the present licensed capacity and maintaining space for one full core off-load.
