1 Subj ect: THEFT OF MEDICAL SHIPMENT CONTAINING IODINE-131 l
._ The licensee informed RIII (Chicago) on June 1,1977, via telephone that I a b_reak in occurred at a carrier's warehouse (Puralator, Inc.) in l Kansas City, Missouri on May 30, 1977. A box containing two m1111 curies I of iodine-131 in less than one ounce of liquid was taken. A number of
. radios and electronic equipment were also taken in the break in.
Extended handling of the radioactive material could result in significant
, radiation exposure. Ingestion of the material could result in damage to the thyroid gland; however the quantity involved is similar to quantities '
used for routine medical therapeutic administration.
The event was reported to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department and therefore local publicity is possible.
l Carrier personnel informed RIII that they do not pir.n to issue a press '
release. RIII does not plan to issue a press relerse. RIII informed the i Regional DOT and the State of Missouri of this event. DOT Headquarters is aware of this event.
