Letter from Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr (BGE) to Mr. R. A. Clark (NRC) dated May 17,1983, Main Steam Line Break Inside Containment (b)

Letter fror.1 Mr. R. A. Clark (NRC) to Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr (BGE) dated August 1,1983, Same Subject During research on the Main Feedwater (MFW) System, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) personnel reviewed References (a) and (b). In the course of the review, we realized that the NRC may not have completely understood our statement of the classification of the system trip circuitry and components. This letter reiterates our original position.

Reference (a) provided a response to IE Bulletin 80-04," Analysis of a PWR Main Steam Line Break With Continued Feedwater Addition." In the response, we said we were installing MFW System trip circuitry. The response further stated that the trip system would be "nonsafety-grade due to the classification of the MFW pumps" and that "... to ensure high reliability, the trip signal will originate at a safety-grade source and all components will be safety grade up to the final trip relays." The final trip relays were never imended to be safety grade. This description matches the 1983 installation of the system and the configuration of the system today.

Should you have questions regarding this matter, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.

Very truly yours, 9809100078 980901 PDR ADOCK Of 40317 P
