. April 22, 1988 Docket Nos.: 50-424/425 t Mr. George F. Head  !

Senior Vice President '

Georgia Power Company  !

P.O. Box 4545 Atlanta, Georgia 30302

Dear Mr. Head:

SUBJECT:

V0GTLE UNITS 1 AND 2 ELECTRICAL SEPARATION CRITERIA The NRC staff is reviewing the submittal dated March 14, 1988 regarding electrical separation criteria for Vogtle Unit 2. This review is required due to the pending Vogtle Unit 2 operating license application. With regard to Yogtle Unit 1, 10 CFR 50.59 governs changes in an operating facility as described in the safety analysis report. It is possible that the reduced separation ,

distances for cable and raceway configurations not previously tested or i analyzed that are described in the submittal involve an unreviewed safety ,

question because the probability of occurrence of a malfunction of equipment important to safety may be increased. If you find that NRC approval is  ;

necessary for Vogtle Unit 1, you should submit an application for amendment to the license pursuant to 10 CFR 50.90.

Sincerely,  :

/s/

Jon B. H:pkins, Project Manager Project Diractorate 11-3 Division of Reactor Projects I/II CC:
