SUBJECT: BOLT SAMPLES OBTAINED DURING PROCUREMENT INSPECTION - JOSEPH

M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (INSPECTION REPORT

N05. 50-348/87-11 AND 50-364/87-11)

During the procurement inspection conducted May 11-22, 1987, at your rwley

facilities, samples of safety-related fasteners were obtained for subsequent

chemical analysis and mechanical testing.

As noted in the enclosed test results, bolts identified as Nos. S0-18 through

50-21 exceeded the limits for chromium and bolt No. 50-23 exceeded the maximum

hardness limit. The remaining fasteners met the mechanical and chemical

properties of the material specification. These fasteners were obtained from

your safety-related fastener material stock and were available for use in the

plant.

( Please provide us, within 30 days of the date of this letter, a written

l statement containing:

1. The results of your review of the test data with respect to the use of

the fasteners in your plant and any corrective actions deemed necessary;

A description of the steps that have been or will be taken to prevent a

reoccurrence, i.e., assure that fasteners purchased meet specifications;

and

3. The dates your t.orrective action and preventive measures were or will

be completed.

In addition, please identify the supplier (s)/ manufacturer (s) who furnished the

five bolts.

Yhe reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter

affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required

under P.L.96-511.
