1 July 21, 1988 Docket No. 50-382 Mr. J. G. Dewease Senior Vice President - Nuclear Operations  ;

Louisiana Power and Light Company j 317 Baronne Street, Mail Unit 17 New Orleans, Lousiana 70160

Dear Mr. Dewease:

SUBJECT:

CONTROL SYSTEM SINGLE FAILURE STUDY In our Safety Evaluation Peports (NUREG-0787) Supplements 1 and 8, we requested that Louisiana Power and Light Company conduct a review to identify any power sources or sensors which provide power or signals to two or more control systems. We also requested that you demonstrate that failures or malfunctions of the power sources or sensors will not result in consequences outside the bounds of the Chapter 15 analysis.

We have reviewed your submittals dated July 2, 1986, April 28 and July 8, 1987. Based on our review, we find that LP&L has demonstrated there are no single failures of control systems power sources or sensors which would result in consequences outside the bounds of the Chapter 15 analysis. We, therefore, consider this issue complete. The staff's Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, Isl David L. Wigginton, Project Manager Project Directorate - IV Division of Reactor Projects - III, IV, V and Special Projects Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
