i l The Cumberland Research Corp. Model 285 storage container was designed to store a maximum of 1 curie (37 GBq) of cobalt-60 as a j sealed source. It is constructed of either lead or tungsten i alloy depending on the source to be stored. the geometry of the j container is cubic and its dimensions will varying depending on i the size of the source. The storage chamber is located in the center of the container and has maximum dimensions of 1/2" x 1/2" ,

x 5/8" (12.7 mm x 12.7 mm x 15.9 mm). A removable 1-1/2" (38.1 l mm) diameter tungsten allow plug or 1" (25.4 mm) lead plug l provides access to the storage chamber. If the shielding is made j

of lead, the lead is encased in stainless steel, minimum 16 gauge, and the steel joints are welded. If the container is constructed with tungsten allow, no cladding is used. A locking  !

mechanism and carrying handle are included in the device.  !

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

The quantity of shielding material in the storage container will be sufficient to meet the requirements of 10 CFR 34.21 for storage containers.

As of the effective date of this document, the Model 285 Storage Container is no longer manufactured and distributed by Cumberland Research Corporation. Cumberland Research Corporation's materials license expired on July 31, 1977 and the company is no longer in business.
