SUBJECT:
FAILURE OF AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM VALVES TO OPERATE ENCLOSURES:
(1)
IN 84-16 (2) Letter dated June 4, 1984:
C. B. Barnett, Automatic Sprinkler, to R. C. DeYoung, IE (3) Form Letter dated November 15, 1984:
- Gullo, Autenatic Sprinkler (4) List entitled " Utilities with Permits to Build Nuclear Power Plants" I am writing to inform you of the current status of the subject problem and our conclusion that no cdditional generic comunications are warranted at this time.
Mississippi Power and Light (MP&L) reported failures to actuate of the auto-matic deluge valve of their fire protection system in LER 50-416/83-126. An infonnation notice was requested by the Region and was issued (Enclosure 1).
Automatic Sprinkler's response (Enclosure 2) stated that no design or manufac-turing problem existed with the Vedel C deluge valve. Automatic Sprinkler Company concluded, at that time, that the problems at Grand Gulf were unique.
We received several calls from licensees following the issuance of IN 84-16.
Most callers were aware of Automatic Sprinkler's position.

't R. L. Baer Then on November 16, 1984, Automatic Sprinkler Company notified the NRC by telephone that they had become aware of a potential problem which could affect the fire protection of customer facilities. Automatic Sprinkler Company noti-fied all utilities with permits to build nuclear power plants (Enclosures 3 and 4). The form letter states that the problem has been duplicated by testing and that failures involving a total of seven valves were reported in 1984. The suspected cause is increased friction in the sliding surfaces. The letter strongly recomends an augmented annual inspection.
Since Automatic Sprinkler Company has notified all licensees of its new find-ings and has strongly recommended appropriate surveillance and maintenance action, we do not plan tq issue any additional generic communications at this time.
