INTRODUi' TION In the original seismic design of CR3 [3], DYNAL computer program was utilized to obtain the modal data (natural frequencies, mode shapes, and participation factors) for the lumped-mass models of the Seismic Category I structures.

Afterthat, the direct generation method developed by Biggs was used to generate floor response spectra.

The direct generation method provides conservative results and significantly reduces computational effort.

The Direct Generation method was implemented by using G/C's in-house FLORMO computer program.

Floor response spectra for 0.5% equipment damping values were generated in Reference [3].

A year ago, G/C developed 2%, 3% and 5% damped floor response curves for the higher elevations of the Auxiliary and Control i

buildings in Reference [1] for use in the resolution of the Unresolved Safety Issue A-46 and other applications.

As done in Reference [1], the original design basis procedure will l

l be used in the generation of the 5% damped SSE floor response l

curves for the Reactor Building Interior Structure Elevation 160' and 180.5'.

DESCRIPTION OF GENERATION METHOD A generalized procedure was developed in Reference [9] for generation of floor response spectra for seismic design and analysis I

of structural systems in nuclear power plants.

A detailed l

description of this procedure is presented in Reference [9].

This procedure is well understood, used and accepted in the industry.

l In the original seismic design of CR3 [3], DYNAL computer program was utilized to obtain the modal data (natural frequencies, mode shapes, and participation factors) for the lumped-mass models of the Seismic Category I structures.

Afterthat, the procedure developed by Biggs was used to generate floor response spectra.

Biggs method l

was implemented by w ing the G/C's in-house FLORMO computer program.

l The necessary input to FLORMO computer program is:

l Ground response spectra corresponding to equipment damping e

value.

l Biggs curve # 1 corresponding to the equipment and structural e

damping values.

This is provided in Reference [9] for certain i

damping values.

For other damping values, linear interpolation or extrapolation is adequate.

Biggs curve # 2 corresponding to the structural damping value.

e This is provided in Reference [9] for certain damping values.

l For other damping values, linear interpolation or extrapolation is adequate.

Natural frequencies of structure, mode shapes, modal e

participation factors and modal accelerations.

Biggs method will be used in the generation of the 5% SSE floor response curves.

In order to account for uncertainty in the structural frequency calculations, the peaks of the floor response spectra will be broadened.

l The reader is referred to Reference [3] for description of the lumped mass model of the Reactor Building Interior Structure, SSE ground response spectra (plot and digitized values), structural damping values, and Biggs curves.

GENERATION OF FLOOR CURVES In this section, G/C will develop the 5% damped floor response curves for the higher elevations of the Reactor Building Interior Structure for future use in the resolution of the Unresolved Safety Issue A-46 and other applications by using the Biggs method described in Section 5.

l As done in Reference [1], the original design basis procedure will

For verification of the input data and FLORMO program, the 0.5%

damped OBE horizontal floor response spectrum curve at Elevation j

180.5' is generated and compared with the respective o 'ginal design basis curve.

A complete agreement is achieved as shown on i

i the following page.

l To achieve the objective of this calculation, the 5.0% OBE curves are generated and, then, the results are multiplied by a factor of 2.0 to develop the corresponding 5.0% SSE curves.

Plots and tables of the generated unbroadened and broadened SSE acceleration floor response spectra are documented in Section 8 of this calculation (Results).

FREQUENCY BROADENING In order to account for uncertainty in the structural frequency j

calculations, the peaks of the floor response spectra will be broadened.

i G/C's in-house S143 computer program is utilized to broaden the generated floor response spectrum curves.

A copy of S143 User's Manual was included in Attachment U of Reference [1].

Program S143 is a postprocessor to G/C's SAP 4 program, S087, Revision 5.

It generates semi-logarithmic plots c,f response spectra using G/C in-house VERSATEC plotter.

In this calculation, FLORMO output file is edited to obtain an identical format of a SAP 4 output file.

The user specifies two variables, EL and ER, in Card 6 as part of the S143 input file.

EL represents the left extension and ER l (Q represents the right extension, which are applied to the peak of V

the floor response spectrum for frequency broadening.

These i

variables are expressed as a percentage of the peak frequency.

Default values for EL and ER are 15% each, which are used in this calculation.

Plots and tables of the generated broadened floor response spectrum curves are documented in Section 8 (Results).
