ATTN: Mr. S. A. White Senior Vice President, Nuclear Power 6N 38A Lookout Place 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, TN 37402-2801 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

EXTENSIONS OF TIME FOR TVA RESPONSES TO NRC i

In the recent past, there were an inordinate number of TVA requests to revise previously established commitment dates to NRC for supplemental l

responses and to extend the time for initial response to Notices of Violation.

As recent examples, a supplemental response commitment date was extended about 14 days for NRC Report 87-30 and three initial responses (NRC Reports 88-07, 88-09 and 88-19) were extended from 4 to 14 days.

The reason given for needing these extensions was the time required in corporate review and concurrence due to management involvement with recent operational issues at Sequoyah-2.

(

We are calling this to your attention for corrective action because we are concerned that this unfavorable trend will continue and lead to untimely resolution of issues by TVA management.

We will continue to track your j

performance in this area. You are requested to identify to us within 30 days what actions you plan to reverse this trend.

{

Sincerely,

[
