O Alabima Power Company 600 North 18th street Post Office Box 2641 Birmingham, Alabama 35291-0400 Telephone 205 250-1837 W. G. Hairston,ill Sen!or Vice President Nuclear Operatior's Docket Nos. 50-348 50-364 10CFR50.54 July 18, 1988 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention: Document Control Desk Washington, D.C.
20555 Gentlemen:
Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant-Units 1 & 2 Bolt Samples Obtained During Procurement Inspection Conducted May 11-22, 1987 (Inspection Report Nos. 50-348/87-11 and 50-364/87-11)
As described in Alabama Power Company's letter of June 3, 1988, any corrective actions that are necessary for bolt sample S0-18, which did not meet the required AS m specification for carbon, would be submitted to the NRC by July 22, 1988. These actions include the following:
1.
The bolt is satisfactory for service as described in Idabama Power Company's letter of June 3, 1988.
For this rea on, no corrective actions are necessary for the specific bolt.
2.
The carbon content of bolt sample S0-18 was the only problem found for an inspection which included evaluating eleven (11) bolt samples, ten (10) elements each, as well as the hardness and tensile strength of each.
For this reason the problem is considered a single isolated case and no corrective actions of a generic nature are required. However, as a preventive measure the vendor has been notified.
The preceeding information represents Alabama Power Company's final response to the NRC letter dated April 21, 1988.
If there are any questions, please advise.
Respectfully submitted, h.
