Gentlemen:
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs.

P. G. Brochman and J. M. Ulie and Ms. N. V. Gilles of this office from
May 17 through June 30, 1988, of activities at Byron Station Units 1 and 2,
authorized by NRC Opereting Licenses No. NPF-37 and NPF-66, and to the
discust,iu1 of our findings with Mr. R. Pleniewicz ar.d others of your staff
at the conclusion of the inspection.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined
during the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of
a selective examination of procedures and representative records,
observations, and interviews with personnel.
During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in
violation of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice. The
inspection showed that action had been taken to correct the identified
violation and to prevent recurrence. Our understanding of your corrective
actions are described in Paragraph 3..: of the enclosed inspection report.
If you dc not agree with our statement of your correctice actions, you are
requested to inform us in writing. Otherwise no reply to tne violation is
required, and we have no further questions regardir.g this matter at this
ume.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Consission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC
Public Document Roc.a.
