Dear Mr. Xintner:
I l
I am responding to your letter of Farch 16, 1988 in which you provided Gru Nuclear's schedule for major expected submittals to the NRC related to the TMI-2 cleanup and requested monthly management neetings to review the prcgram status and identify critical GPU and NRC act W s.
i Although the Comission has decided to reduce the dedicated onsite staff l
associated with oversight of 7MI-2, the Commission continues to recognize the l
importance c' a safe and expediticus cleanup of the TMI-2 facilii,y. Sufficient Headquarters technical staff will be made available to continue to support the u
ongoing cleanup activities and adjudicatory proceedirgs. As you know.
l Dr. Michael Kasnik will continue to be the r eject Panager for TMI-?, and we J
are still providing a technical reviewer at ;he TMI site for day-to-day l
contact., with your staff.
The schedule that you srovided will assist my staff in resource planning necessary to conduct tie NRC required reviews.
I assure you that the NRC staff is comitted to the timely review of those temaining cleanup tasks necessary prior to storage of the facility. Our respective licensing staffs discuss the current status of specific reviews and the prioritization of reviews on at least a weekly basis. My staff has been infomed to quickly elevate potential p:oblems to the appropriate level of management.
I have asked Mr. Frank Miraglia. Associate Director for Projects, and his staff to meet with appropriate GPU Nuclear managerent in the near future to review the cleanup program status, identify critical review activities, and discuss ways of improving the effectiveness of our respective staffs in managing the remaining licensing effort. At that time, it would be appropriate to discuss tre scheduling of pericdic management meeting it the TVI site.
