[j Region III U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Re: License SNM-ll74, Docket 70-1193 Request for extension of license expiration date

Dear Mr. Mallet:

Sequoyah Fuels Corporation License SNM-ll74 for the Cimarron Plutonium Facility expires March 31, 1988.

In light of the status of activities at the facility, SFC believes extension of the license expiration date is appropriate to enable final decomissioning and license termination rather than the filing of a license renewal application.

Therefore, SFC requests herein extension of the current license through December 31, 1989.

SFC currently is carrying out decomissioning activities at the Cimarron Plutonium Facility.

As verified by NRC's Inspection report dated December 14, 1987, all equipnent and related process and cuilding systems containing TRU waste concentrations of plutonium have been removed or decontaminated and all TRU waste has been shipped for disposal. The snull anount of waste remaining is low-level, but conplete cleanup will require effort beyond the expiration date of the current license.

Following completion of the cleanup, some additional time will also be required for NRC's review of the license reports and NRC survey and release of the site.

i I

SFC is confident all activities leadin'J to deccmmissioning of the facility and temination of the license can be done by December 31, 1989, and requests extension of the license through that date.

SFC also requests that NRC begin its survey activities in the sumer of 1988.
