Zech, Jr., Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street, NW Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Zech:

I am writing on behalf of a constituent to inquire as to whether there is federal assistance available to compensate people who live within an emergency planning zone.

The Maine Yankee Power Plant is located in Wiscasset, Maine.

The townspeople of Wiscasset receive tax advantages and reduced education tuition costs, among other benefits availa) 2 to them due to the proximity of the nuclear power plant.

?eoole living in outlying towns, however, receive only limited advantages for living within the emergency zone.

I would like to know whether there is a federal program that determines how compensation is dictributed to the people living within the emergency planning zone, and what benefits might be available to the neighbors of Wiscasset.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, George J. Mitchell United States Senator i
