This is in response to IE Bulletin No. 79-18. " Audibility Problems Encountered l
on Evacuation of Personnel From High-Noise Areas" for North Anna Power Station Unit No. 1.
1.
During the preoperational testing of the station communications system, it was discovered that the fire and evacuation alarms were not loud enough to be heard throughout the entire plant. As a result, an amplifier was added to the circuitry to increase the volume of these alarms. Current alarm systems and evacuation announcement systems have been determined clearly audible in all plant areas except the emergency diesel generator rooms when the diesels are operating.

Because of their function, the diesel generator rooms are not normally habitable. Also, during a station evacuation, personnel accountability l
1s accomplished through use of approved emergency plan implementing procedures.
A design change to install a visual evacuation signal in the diesel generator rooms is presently being formulated. When this design change is finalised, a time schedule for its implementation will be submitted.
