Gentlemen:

Reference (b) stated that Seabrook Station would employ the Fluoroborate Selective Ion Electrode method for post-accident .,cron analysis. This analysis method was recommended by Exxon Nuclear Idaho Company, Inc., in a 1981 report for the NRC.

New Hampshire Yankeo (NHY) has subsequently and successful lab-oratory experience with boron analysis by Mannitol Titrations. This method was discussed in the Exxon Nuclear report, but it was not specifically recommended dua to possible maintenance difficulties.

Experience at Seabrook Station indicates Mannitol Ticrations to be a superior method because of operational simplicity and consistently reliable results. NHY intends to revise the preferred method for post-accident boron analysis to be Mannitol Titrations. A discussion of this method is presented in the enclosure.

Should you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Mr. Warren J. Hall at (603) 474-9521, extension 4046.

ENCLOSURE TO NYN-88037 Boron by Mannitol Titrations Boron concentration in liquid samples is determined using a Metrohm Titroprocessor unit to do Mannitol Titrations. This procedure was devel-oped for the range of 1 ppm to 10 ppm Boron; higher concentrations may by determined by dilution.

Boron standards were prepared in a post-accident reactor coolant matrix specified in NUREG-0737, II.B.3, and diluted 500:1. The matrix consisted of the following:

20 ppm K+ as KI, KNO3 10 ppm Cl- as NH4 Cl 2 ppm Li+ as LiOH 250ppmCg+ as CsNO 5 ppm La+ as as La(N3)3 KI 3 6"2o 40 ppm I 2 10 ppm Ba+ as Ba(NO3 )

5 ppm Ce+ as e(NO3 )

(NH4 )2 6.4 ppm NH4+ as (NH 4 )2 Ce(h0 )6346' E Cl 157.8 ppm NO3 as KNO 3 , CsNO3 , La(NO3 )3 *6H2 0, Ba(NO3 )2, (NH4)3 Ce(NO3 )6 Results of the testing determined that the method of analysis had no affect on the accuracy of the analysis.
