l DISCUSSION OF RESULTS Air Surveillance Air particulate activity as judged from the monthly averages has started the anticipated increase which normally occurs af ter winter. The rate of increase l

1s greater than in the corresponding period of 1970 for comparable programs reflect-ing the new debris injected into the atmosphere from a distant nuclear test on Oc tot e r 14, 1970. The presence of this new material was seen during two weekly periods in 1970 and may have been seen during the period 2/9 - 2/16 during this quarter, but at much lower levels.

The agreement between the on-site, eff-site and reference stations con-tinues satisfactory.

Gamma monitoring using thermoluminescent dosimeters was continued through the period. On-site values on a monthly average basis compare well with off-site values. New dosimeters were put into service in February and the entire system was recalibrated to minimize variation. Several additional months of data are needed i to permit detailed evaluation.

Aquatic Surveillance Domestic and recreational water samples yielded analytical results which are comparable to those seen previously. Great Pond continues to be higher in gross beta activity than College Pond or Little South Pond. This has generally been the case since early in the program and most likely reflects a different watershed.

Great Pond samples have been noted to have a much greater concentration of solids.

Well water samples continue to show the lowest gross beta activity and 90 Sr has been detected in only one sample since the start of the program.

Seawater fractional beta values for fractions I (insoluble) and IV (cesium) are consistent with earlier data. Fraction II (sulfides) and III (carbonates) are

u. -

somewhat higher than the corresponding period of 1970, but are consistent with the fourth quarter 1970 data.

Marine life data are similar to that observed previously.

Terrestrial Surveillance The only samples taken during this period were of milk. No other crop or food samples are available at this time of the year.

90 Sr and 137 Cs values showed somewhat more variability than observed during the previous quarter; however, the average values for this period compare favorably between locations. Since milk is probably in the critical pathway for radioactivity deposited on land, these data should be observed closely to insure that the sources of variability are minimited.

SD MARY The pre-operational environmental radiation surveillance program appears to be providing the ccrrelation of data between locations which will permit mean-ingful comparisons for the operational data. Tb' . ral variability to be expected is also being defined.

No changes in the program are recommended at this time.
