SUBJECT:

PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF SURVEY OF PLANT DATA TO SUPPORT THE NRC MARK I CONTAINMENT ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM Attached is a sumary of the licensee's responses to our questionnaire on the existing cipability at Mark I containments plants to deal with severe accidents.

The sumary includes information on nine plants for which responses have been received.

The remaining seven licensees have either declined to participate in the survey or are presently preoccupied with other activities.

We have intentiorally left out the names of tiie plants / licensees.

We feel that, due to inadequate time given to the licensees to gather the requested information, the accuracy of the data could not be assured. Leaving out the plants'/ licensees' names will protect our infonnation sources against any errors and at the same time will not adversely affect our objective of assessing the kinds and the ranges of Mark I facility features which could be mobilized to deal with those severe accidents which could challenge the integrity of Mark ? containments.

You will note that most of the licensees have provided all plant features instead of only the alternate features as requested in our survey. We have n.ade no attempt to separate the design basis safety features from the truly alternate features.
