Docket Nos.:
50-277/278 Mr. Edward G. Bauer, Jr.
Vice President and General Counsel Philadelphia Electric Company-2301 Market Street-Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19101
Dear Mr.'Rauer:
SUBJECT:
USE OF MICR0 PROCESSORS IN PLANT SAFETY SYSTEM During the staff's reviews of documentation describing the compliance of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station with the Commission's regulation in 10 CFR 50.62 the staff learned that the reactor protection system (RPS) has been modified. Specifically, it is understood that Foxboro microprocessors have been included in the plant design.
The staff ~is interested in learning more about the licensee's evaluation of such design modifications with respect to whether they involved unreviewed safety questions and with respect to the degree of compliance of such modification with the applicable protection system design criteria.
Specifically, this includes subjects such as electrical separation, electrical isolation, control / protection interaction, time responses, set points, surveillance-intervals, testability and software verification and validation.
These subjects are sufficiently complex that a meeting between our staff's is most likely the appropriate vehicle to initiate the consideration of this subject.. In order to facilitate our praparation for such a meeting we request that you provide the evaluation and design modification packages, such as those referenced on drawing number 6280-M-352, applicable to this issue several weeks prior to the meeting.
We request that you prepare for this meeting to be held within 30 days of receipt of this letter.
