SUBJECT:

Amendment Request 78-3 i

Gentlemen:

The Commercial Nuclear Fuel Plant currently is authorized to possess up to 1.2 milligrams of Californium-252 as sealed sources. The 252Cf is used in a non-destructive assay system.

hhile this quantity is adequate for normal operating purposes, source replacement requirements make it-necessary to roguest an increase in the authorized possession Icyc1 to 3 2a2Cf.

The increase, if approved, will authorize the quantity milligrams of necessary to accommodato source replacement and temporary possession of the depicted sourco while, at the same time, allow for slight variations in nominal source size.

No adverso impact on health or safety is anticipated since existing i

facilitics and monitoring programs assure that acceptable safety critoria, as stated in the licenso, will be met.

A " revision index", noting the changes in the license that would result from approval of this amendment request is attached as is a proposed revision i

to the affected licenso condition.

Our current plans call for source replace-ment in approximately 8 weeks.

Your prompt consideration would therefore be greatly appreciated.
