United States Atomic Energy Commission Directorate of Regulatory Operations OOCUMENT POOR QUAUTA9ES CONTAINS Region I 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406 Gentlemen:

~

In response to your letter of July'18,1973 and to the Regulatory Operations Bulletin No. 73-2 (" Malfunction of Containment Supply Valve' Switch") Yankee Atomic Electric Company offers the following information.

The containment purge system at the Yankee Rowe plant is equipped with supply and exhaust line isointion valves which may be operated only in a manual mode. The system isolation valves are locked in a closed p sition during normal plant operation, and as such, are not '

subj ect to plant operational surveillance testing.

It is concluded that the design of the containment purge system precludes the possibility of system component failure similar to that described in Regulatory Operations Bulletin No. 73-2.

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY hYd t' U L. H. Heider Manager of Operations EWJ/kg Y
