Gentlemen:

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Meses. Z. Falevits

and R. Landsman of this office on October 5 through December,22, 1987,

January 19, February 18 and 26, 1988, of activities at Braidwood Station,

Units 1 and 2, authorized by NRC Operating Licenses No. NPF-72 and No. NPF-75

and to the discussion of our findings with Mr. E. E. Fitzpatrick and others of

your staff at the conclusion of the inspection. This inspection was cciducted

to evaluate electrical and instrumentation components, including systel design

and completed installation.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areat examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and

interviews with personnel.

During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation

of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice. With respect to

Item 2.b. , the inspection showed that action had been ta' ten to correct the

identified violation and to prevent recurrence. Our understanding of your

corrective actions are described in Paragraph 8.g of the enclosed inspection

report. Consequently, no reply to the violation is required and we have no

further questions regarding this matter at this time. Regarding the remainir.g

items, a written response is required. These items were, however, discussed

with members of your staff during a conference ca'.1 on February 26, 1988.

During this discussion, your staff, stated that actions had been completed to

resolve all but one of the items. Corrective actions for the remaining item

(nameplates) were underway. This issue is not an immediate safety concern.

Your staff also stated that control room critical drawings had been reviewed

and found to be acceptable. The NRC plans to conduct a future inspection to

review these corrective actions. x

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.700 of the Comission's regulations, a copy of

this letter, the enclosures, and your response to this letter will be placed

in the NRC Public Document Room.

The responses directed by this letter and the accompanying Notice are not

subject to the clearance procedures of the. Office of Management and Budget as

required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511.
