Dear Mr. Mueller:
On May 2,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Zion Generating Station Units
1 and 2. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
.
Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within these areas, the
inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and representative records,
'
interviews with personnel, and observation of activities in progress.
This inspection was to perform the physical security core inspection in NRC Inspection
Procedure 81700 and review the status of previous open inspection findings. The report's
Executive Summary provides an overview of our assessment of your performance in
Physical Security, an aspect of Plant Support. At the conclusion of the inspection the
findings were discussed with those members of your staff identified in the report.
The overall effectiveness of your physical security program was good. Additionally, plant
security force personnel performed well during actual tactical drills involving your response
strategy. They demonstrated both an understanding of the protective strategy and the
ability to deploy immediately and to move quickly and tactically. The command and
control and communications between responders and tacticalleaders were excellent.
No violations of NRC requirements were identified during this inspection.

disclosure according to Part 73, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Section
