SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MAY 2, 1997, MEETING REGARDING COMPLETION OF INSTALLATION OF THERMAL LAG FIRE BARRIERS On May 2, 1997, representatives of GPU Nuclear Corporation met with the NRC staff to discuss the status of the implementation schedule for completion of installation of Thermo-lag at both the Three Mile Island, Unit 1 (TMI-1) and Oyster Creek Nuclear Facilities. Enclosure 1 is a list of attendees.

In summary, GPU representatives stated that the current schedule for completing the installation of all required Thermo-lag fire barriers at Oyster Creek and TMI-l is December 1998 and December 1999, respectively. The licensee indicated that the completion sciiedule for TMI-l could occur earlier pending approval of two exemption requests from 10 CFR 50, Appendix R currently under review by the NRC staff, in the next three or four months.

The staff indicated that approval of the two exemptions would be based on their merits. Enclosure 2 provides more detailed information on the issues discussed. l In view of the possibility of selling or retiring the Oyster Creek Facility by the year 2000, the licensee indicated that they are currently reviewing all regulatory commitments with respect to the Oyster Creek facility and will have further communications with the NRC on the results of this review in the next three or four months. l Original signed by Bart Buckley, Senior Project Manager Ronald B.
