Dear Dr. Soong:
We request amendment to our materials license number SNM-362 to permit a greater activity of strontium-90 as sealed sources. An increasing demand for calibration of *Sr devices used in restenosis therapy indicates that a number of the sources could be at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at a given time. Therefore, we request that line item "O" of the license be increased from three (3) curies to five (5) curies.
We anticipate that each of these sources will contain between fifty (50) millicuries and one hundred (100) millicuries in a small volume " seed". The radiation control mechanisms to be used are those described in our Materials License Document. They include documented receipts and dispositions, leak tests at no more than semiannual intervals using tests that can detect 0.005 microcuries of removable contamination, shielded calibration and storage facilities, and remote handling and viewing devices as necessary and practical for the procedure.
