Dear Mr. Denton:

By our letters, Serial Nos. 301/071477, dated August 9, 1977, and 480/101977, dated December 16, 1977, we provided the Staff with information concerning our planned inservice inspection program for the first 40-month period a t North Anna U,it No.1, and requested exemption f rom certain require-ments of ASME Section XI.

During several recent telephone conversations, including a conference call on'0ctober 19, 1.978, Messrs. A. W. Dromerick and M. R. Hum of the Staf f re-quested amplification of some points in our December 16 letter. The requested information is provided below.

Wi th reference to Attachment 1, page S5.90-5, paragraph (5), the specific welds for which complete inservice examination is impractical for the first 40-month inspection period are:

With reference to Attachment 1, page S5 90-11, Note 10, Vepco will supplement the volumetric examination of the residual heat exchanger shell to tubesheet flange welds with a surface examination.

With reference to Attachment 2, the calibration standards used for North Anna Unit No. 1 are not cladded.

We trust that the above information will permit you to complete your review of our initial inservice inspection program.
