VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT 2 INSPECTION OF THE INSIDE RECIRCULATION SPRAY PUMPS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Virginia Electric and Power Company letter dated March 25, 1987 (Serial No.87-094) notified you of our intention not to perform cn optical alignment of the inside recirculation spray pumps following their inspection unless new bushings were to be installed.
The original commitment, as documented in our letter dated September 4,1979 (Serial No. 712) and restated in the North Anna Safety Evaluation Report, NUREG-0053, Supplement 10, section 6.3.3, required that an optical alignment be performed following each periodic pump inspection.
We have continued to evaluate the need to optically align the pump internals, including additional discussions with the pump manufacturer, and have l
concluded that optical alignment of the inside recirculation spray pumps is i
unnecessary to ensure proper pump operation.
This conclusion is based on the l
following information.

o The design of the inside recirculation spray pumps utilizes rabbet or registered fits on all of the stacked-up column and bowl assemblies.
This design ensures that the column bushings and bowl bushings align true with each other.
o Optical alignment of the pump internals can be accomplished only after removal of the column and bowl bushings.
The pump manufacturer recommends, however, that the bushings not be removed from their housings unless they are to be replaced, as the bushings are quite brittle and will likely be damaged during removal.

o Satisfactory pump performance has been demonstrated over many years of service.
Results of inspections performed on these pumps show normal wear for pumps subjected to the existing service and testing conditions.
Accordingly, we request your concurrence with our intention to change our commitment regarding optical alignment of the inside recirculation spray pumps as follows.
Following any major maintenance activity performed on the inside recirculation spray pumps involving installation of replacement
- parts, Virginia Electric and Power Company will conduct the appropriate pump assembly, testing and inspection in accordance with the pump manufacturer's recommendations.
This change supersedes our previous letter on this matter, dated March 25, 1987 (Serial No.87-094).
